2017 Fort mcMurray International Film Festival

Celebrating it’s 7th year, the Fort McMurray International Film Festival (YMMIFF) was held November 10 – 12th at the Suncor Centre for the Performing Arts Theatre. This year’s program included

24 International/National Films
1 Hollywood Blockbuster (The Force Awakens)
2 workshops
3 locally produced (Award Winning) selections
5 short films made during our 48h film challenge November 3 – 5th.

6 awards were handed out in the closing ceremony presented by the Fort McMurray Filmmakers Association.

Best Animation, Experimental or Music Video: Ali Noori Oskouei for “Release From Heaven”
Best Short: Sarah Clift for “The Good Mother”
Best Performance: Valeria Chavez in “Still Devout”
Best Director: Johan Karrento for “God Hates Finland”
Best Feature: Var Bhalla for “This is Home”
Wood Buffalo Spirit Award: Kelton Stepanowich for “Gods Acre”

A special honourable mention was made for the non-competitive invited film from previous Wood Buffalo Spirit Award Winner

Honourable Mention: Cody Bown for “Gregoire”

A total of 5 local teams entered the annual 48hr Film Challenge running November 3 – 5th

Each film had to incorporate the 3 special elements announced at the contest launch.  The winners include:

48h Challenge – Best Performance: Danny Roldan in “Space Blanks”
48h Challenge – Best Director:  “Perspective”
48h Challenge – Best Film: See Fad Productions for “Jimmy’s Work Day”
